A Farewell to Andrew

It was a cold December 1998 night. An Animal Umbrella volunteer and a friend had been working on the waterfront area to rescue the remaining cats of a colony of ferals as the area was scheduled to go under major reconstruction and the cats would have not survived. A trap was set up in an area where these cats had been living for years and a shivering cat was in it. He was taken to the home of one of the volunteers so that it could receive veterinary care the following day. Much to everyone's surprise, the cat, which was named Andrew, was not feral and had been abandoned in the filthy, cold area for a while. After considerable TLC, Andrew recovered from his terrible ordeal and started to gain its weight back. A wonderful family in Littleton adopted him and gave him lots of love, care and attention. Andrew returned this love with his own and with lots of devotion to his new owners. Unfortunately, one sad day a year later, this sweet gentle cat jumped from the arms of one of his owners and died a few minutes later with an apparent heart attack. The vet thought that his little heart had succumbed to the stress he must have endured while he was trying to survive in the dreadful area. We will always remember Andrew for his sweetness and we thank his new owners for having given him a wonderful, although short, happy life.
